January 12, 2012 was a proud day for TA. At the home basketball games against Pickens Academy, we announced the creation of the Jeff Atkins Scholarship in recognition of Mr. Atkins' dedicated service and passionate commitment to Tuscaloosa Academy’s athletics program. The Jeff Atkins Scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who qualifies for financial aid and who plays varsity girls basketball. Mr. Atkins was president of the Tuscaloosa Academy Knights Supporters (TAKS) for three years and many enhancements to TA athletics were made under his leadership, especially in the areas of fundraising and finances.
Mr. Atkins was joined by many friends and family at the presentation, including his wife Tammy and his two daughters Haley and Lindsey, both graduates of TA and strong contributors to TA’s athletics programs, especially basketball, track and cheerleading. In his speech, Mr. Atkins spoke with inspiration and courage about his illness and his faith in God. In fact, I must honestly say that this was one of the most courageous speeches I have witnessed.
Since last evening, there has been such an outpouring of support for Mr. Atkins that people in the TA community have asked how they can contribute to the scholarship fund we are creating. Despite this not being the original intention, we will honor any and all contributions made in Mr. Atkins name and set aside all funds donated for this purpose. You may make donations by writing a check to TA and indicating it is for the Jeff Atkins Scholarship.
